No hoof, no horse
The role of the hoof is as a shock absorber and protector of the internal structures. There are severalinfluencing factors contributing to hoof horn quality and growth, including genetic factors, the environment, management and nutrition.
Research clearly shows long term supplementation of biotin, particularly together with other key nutrients such as zinc, methionine and bioavailable sulphur, will improve hoof horn growth and structure especially in horses with hoof defects, which could otherwise seriously reduce the functionality of the hoof.
Keratin is a key protein which occurs in all surface tissues of the body and hooves. It acts rather like scaffolding to provide strength within the hoof structure. Sulphur helps build di-sulphide bridges to give keratin its strength and is provided in the form of MSM and methionine, which donate therequired sulphur. Zinc, which is provided in an organic bioavailable form, is required for the normal keratization of hoof horn and to ensure maximum utilisation of the key ingredients.
Biotin is a sulphur-rich vitamin and whilst it is present in many feedstuffs, it is generally not easily available to the horse or present at the high levels that are required for repair (15mg per day for a 500kg horse).
