The growth of foals is phenomenal. In the first three months, a foal trebles its weight and by the end of year one, will have achieved 60% of adult weight and grown about 90% of adult height. This rapid growth requires a vast amount of nutrition, which in the first six months comes almost exclusively from the mares milk.

There are enormous risks involved when mares give birth. Horses are known to have the second highest birth mortality rate in the animal world and birthing is often complicated by occurring in the middle of the night. It is also not uncommon for a troubled mare to reject her foal or be lacking in milk. Treatment after foaling or mastitis may also cause problems with suckling. It is essential due to the delicate and vulnerable state of a foals digestive system that a good quality milk substitute is fed.

Aintree Foal Milk is a high quality milk substitute with a composition carefully matched to mares milk. High quality skim milk helps minimise digestive upset, essential in order to avoid further gastrointestinal stress on an already compromised and fragile digestive system. Aintree Foal Milk contains generous levels of calcium and phosphorus to ensure skeletal growth of the young foal. Trace minerals copper, zinc, manganese and selenium promote optimum foal growth and development. Aintree Foal Milk provides a balanced supply of nutrients for controlled, quality growth, reducing future risk of developmental orthopaedic diseases. A broad spectrum of vitamins at tailored levels support normal growth and maintenance of body systems.

Note: Within 4 hours of birth and beforemilk is fed, the foal must receive colostrum, either nursed from the dam, from a colostrum replacement or administered by a vet. If in doubt about the health or condition of your foal, you should seek veterinary advice.
